Wildflowers of the Jarbidge Mountain Range

Location: Bear Creek & Coon Creek Summits

Humboldt National Forest

Jarbidge, Nevada

Jarbidge Is A Strange Name. Its origin was even stranger. Jarbidge is the twisted spelling and pronounciation of Jahabich (Jah-Hah-Bitch) and the word is also a confused way of saying Tsawhabitts (Tuh-Saw-Haw-Bits).

Tsawhawbitts was the name of an evil cannibalistic giant who, according to local Indian legend, roamed the mountains and valleys capturing people, puting them into a basket, then returning to Jarbidge Canyon to eat them.

There is archaeological evidence of Indians having lived in nearby mountain and valley areas while there is none in the canyon proper.

Jarbidge today is a pleasant place to visit. Nestled in the Jarbidge Canyon, the fabled home of "Tsawhawbitts", the evil man-eating giant, the town is picturesque and the countryside is beautiful.
